Migraines - Causes And Treatments

By andrewkharker at 2010-01-12 00:45:11
Around two-thirds of migraines occur in women (because of hormone fluctuations). They actually happen more often than diabetes, epilepsy and asthma combined. Many factors can go into causing a migraine, and diagnosis is largely symptomatic.

The symptoms of a migraine can include episodes of headache pain (which is usually focused on one side of the head), accompanied by nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and (in around 20% of migraine sufferers) a visual aura, or a presence of a white zig-zag like light in one's field of vision.

Only migraine sufferers can truly understand how debilitating migraines can be. Those who are the worst afflicted by migraines have to put their lives on hold every time the migraine attacks set in.

As a mother and wife that isn't good for you or your family. It's also difficult to call in sick to work time and time again. Modern migraine medicine can be helpful in relieving the pain, but there are often side effects that makes you feel like you are sleepwalking or stuck in the 'zombie' state.

Just a few on the long list of migraine causes are stress and tension, changes in the weather, exposure to bright lights, strong smells, loud noises, and fatigue just to name a few. Foods and drinks which contain caffeines such as coffee, tea, and chocolate can act as triggers along with certain meats and cheeses which contain nitrates and artificial sweeteners.

Alcohol has long since been linked to and brought up when discussing what causes migraines and many sufferers have to abstain from alcohol consumption altogether because of how powerful a trigger it can be.

Migraines are one of the most common ailments of the nervous system. It causes recurrent headaches and sometimes other neurological symptoms, such as numbness, tingling or weakness on one side of the body. The first sign of a migraine may be an "aura," or a premonition that an attack is imminent. There may be visual disturbance, such as bright spots or zigzag lines before both eyes.

Heredity and food triggers have been generally described as causes of this type of headache. There are many recorded cases where the patients feel that they are getting it because of some history of the disease in their family.

The other important thing is food triggers. It is a known fact that there are certain foods that give people allergies. Similarly, there are certain foods that trigger the onset of the headache. Strangely, there is not a certain class of food that can be accused as the cause for the headache.

Yoga is very effective in combatting stress which is a major trigger for migraines. Yoga combines stretching and using the body with learning relaxed breathing techniques. Breathing properly is important in order to get enough oxygen into the bloodstream and clearing out toxins from your system. Meditation is also highly beneficial in preventing the anxiety and panic that often follows the onset of a migraine attack

Ice treatment is another natural migraine treatment that seems to work for many migraineurs. This involves wrapping a wet towel, soaked in ice water, around the skull. You can also try to press the towel against your eyes, if your migraine is ocular. A few minutes of this, should ease the pain notably.
