Cough is a reflex which is stimulated by irritation of the respiratory mucosa in the lungs, trachea (windpipe) or the pharynx (throat region). The cough reflex is infact a protective mechanism.

It is an attempt by the body to clear the airways of contaminants. Therefore, if this is the case, do we really want to stop the cough mechanism? The answer is both yes and no.

Prior to share about cough remedies, it is better to know first about the various causes. Upper respiratory infection in most cases often becomes the main cause of this condition. Usually, the infection is caused by cold viruses or bacteria. Asthma frequently also caused fever.

The vitality of the system has been lowered by improper diet, loss of sleep, lack of exercise and fresh air, and improper elimination. If the stomach and entire body were kept in good condition, there would be but few colds. Improper clothing and bedding at night are often causes of colds.

Many parents believe in the healing properties of orange juice, but grapes are perhaps one of the most effective, old fashioned cough remedy. Adults can enjoy eating the fruit and help to reduce their coughing spells at the same time. If eating the fruit whole is not an option, you might try dissolving some honey in grape juice to make syrup that will be easier to swallow. A sauce prepared from pureed raisins is another handy way to use grapes as a cough remedy.

Licorice tea is another great natural cough treatment. Licorice has antibacterial properties that will help you baby fight the bacteria that are causing the cough. It also soothes the throat and calms the respiratory tract; helping her get some much needed sleep. Make a cup of licorice tea and give it to your baby as warm as possible, of course without burning her.

Honey acts as a soothing agent on the throat and therefore is a natural suppressant to coughing. Whether this is taken in a tea or directly, honey seems to be the best natural remedy you can take when fighting a cough. In addition to taking the honey directly you can also add a bit of ginger to the tea or liquid to help as well. This is all very good information for parent concerned with giving their children an OTC medication for cough suppressant.

Lemon is very effective for chronic cough. You can add several dashes of white or black pepper to a sliced lemon and to take its juices to relieve yourself from constant coughing. You can do this thrice each day or until you feel more relieved.

Consuming grapes is also one easy yet effective alternative, since grapes act as a natural expectorant. If you feel that a cough is about to start, gargle several times each day with salt and water. Make sure that the water is salty enough before gargling, as this will make the mucus easier to cough out. Carrot juice is also best served warm rather than cold throughout the day.

Essential oils including black pepper, cardamom, cedar wood, cypress, Eucalyptus globulus and Eucalyptus radiata, frankincense, Helichrysium, lemon, peppermint, pine, rosemary and sandalwood may all help. These oils may be diffused into a room, inhaled or applied as a rub.
