Hay Fever - Diet And Treatments

By andrewkharker at 2010-01-20 01:00:03
Hay fever causes many sick days from work during the summer, and can make life hard for sufferers. In the UK the most common pollen to cause hay fever is grass pollen. Hay fever is an allergy to pollen, when the high pollen counts come into contact with the back of your throat and nose they cause an allergic reaction which causes the symptoms of hay fever. Hay fever is usually inherited, but can develop in some people, the more you are in contact with high counts of pollen.

The symptoms of hay fever include itching and runny eyes along with a sore nose which are due to the allergy. Pay particular attention to when you start to experience symptoms considering this may give you some indication as to the specific allergy causing the problem. If you start to develop symptoms in the early part of the year (March or April) your undoubtedly are reacting to pollen produced by the local trees.

Hay fever, once thought to be caused by hay or dried grass, is one of the most common allergies and is caused by an abnormal reaction to pollens of trees and grasses although house dust mite and animal fur can also trigger it. This abnormal reaction of the immune system causes the release of histamine which results in swelling and inflammation in the tissues and the distressing symptoms.

One of the most common types of allergies is hay fever. This is when the body is allergic to pollen and is typically the worse during the summer months when the flowers are in bloom. However it can start during the spring when the trees start to show there buds.

Avoiding dairy products can most certainly help, as these products tend to cause a build up of mucus. A high intake of vitamin C can help reduce the attacks, or eating plenty of fruits and vegetables specially those high in vitamin C such as the citrus fruits and strawberries. Also beneficial is garlic in the form of capsules. Local honey can act as a preventative in some cases.

Some people's immune systems have become over-reactive to some naturally occurring airborne particles, particularly pollens from all those new flowers. Immunoglobulins, a component of your immune system, continually patrol your mucous membranes. When they encounter an invader, they alert other members of your immune system to release histamine and throw off the foreign particles; by sneezing and producing lots of mucus to wash it out.

Honey, of course, is derived from pollen-collecting bees that lick the nectar away from pollen-bearing plants. So when you think about it giving honey to someone with hay fever may seem like a potentially foolish move, when one considers the substances origins.

Allergy is the most common illness in the world. It is characterized by the immune system's reaction to substances that are viewed by the body as potentially harmful. The body launches an attack on these substances which is manifested by the symptoms experienced in an allergy attack. There are many substances that can cause an allergic reaction. Among them are peanuts, shellfish, eggs, milk, dust, insect bites and pollen.

There are many available medication used today to treat hay fever symptoms. You should remember that the objective of these medications is to treat the symptoms. The best way still is to avoid the possible cause of your allergy.
