Influenza - Causes And Treatments

By andrewkharker at 2010-01-21 01:08:33
A contagious virus that affects the upper respiratory system causes influenza. The virus passes from one person to another by coughing and sneezing. When the virus enters the body it attacks cells, where it reproduces many new virus particles.
The influenza virus is a transmittable virus, which spreads from one person to another through tiny droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets are released in the air by these actions.

A change in the virus RNA can cause mutation of the influenza viruses thereby producing new strains. This constant changing causes the virus to evade the immune system even if you taken shots and other precautions. A person is susceptible to influenza virus throughout his or her lifetime. Even though you have taken proper protection your body the antibodies in your body will not recognize the new strains of virus and you will become sick. People are susceptible to novel flu viruses such as bird flu and swine flu because the antibodies don't recognize them.

The infection is sometimes confused with common cold but its symptoms are more severe than typical sneezing. Infection of influenza lasts for about a week and sometimes more. It is characterized by sudden onset of high fever, muscle ache, feeling chills, body ache, headache, severe malaise, sore throat, rhinitis and non-productive cough. Dizziness and loss of appetite is another cause of influenza. Sometime vomiting, weakness and ear pain can prove associated symptom of influenza.

Influenza can attack anyone at anytime. However, people are particularly susceptible to influenza during the changes of seasons. During influenza, the main affected area is the respiratory channel. When the weather turns cold from hot or vice versa, many people irrespective of colds do fall prey to influenza. The disease can easily flow from one person to another. The primary routes for its transmission are sneezing and coughing. Influenza can also spread if one uses the clothes particularly the hanky or the towel used by an influenza affected person.

Symptoms are detected and diagnosed by your physicians in three different ways. First, a physician can name influenza as a diagnosis by means of symptoms. If you exhibit specific symptoms of influenza than you will be diagnosed accordingly. Second, the doctor can ask for blood tests to determine the type of viral strain that you have. Lastly and most accurately, the doctor can point out influenza through a spinal fluid analysis. In milder forms, the physician usually does the diagnosis through identification of symptoms. In severe cases, a blood test and spinal fluid analysis will be required.

The first step in influenza treatment is prevention itself. This is done via vaccination as well as avoidance, if possible, of affected people. A person may be contagious at least a day before they start showing symptoms, until a week after. The virus is transmitted via droplets (when sneezing or coughing) directly onto another person or as small aerosol particles that can be breathed in by another. The virus in droplets may remain alive on a person's hands or on surfaces of fomites (inanimate objects), and can be transferred to another person's mucous membranes via direct contact of the hands and mouth/nose. Therefore, preventive measures must take into account good hygiene practices, including hand-washing, adequate cleaning of surfaces and clothing, avoiding placing hands and inanimate objects into one's mouth/nose, and sneezing/coughing/blowing into tissues and disposing of them properly.

The treatment for both stages of flu signs is symptomatic and supportive. For example, you have to take analgesics if you are experiencing fever. You should also have a cool sponge bath to lower your temperature, sometimes with alcohol for extremely high fevers. Body fatigue can be addressed with a good rest. As often as possible, you need to steer clear of stress mainly if you feel that the influenza signs are worsening. Most importantly, you have to see a doctor and ask for a proper treatment. The health care professional will be able to give you the correct care that should be given for an influenza patient. There are new treatments being found everyday. Most flu treatments seek to ease the symptoms until the infection has a change to run its course.
